Hayward Super Pump Inground Pool Pump Review

Are you searching for a new single speed pool pump for your inground swimming pool? Maybe you want to replace your old pool pump that has screeched to a halt? You may consider getting the Hayward Super Pump.

Introduction

The Hayward Super Pump has been one of the best-selling pool pumps for a long time. It gives a reliable performance at an affordable price.

These Hayward swimming pool pumps are strong competition for the Pentair pool pumps.

My review of the Hayward Super Pump lists its most important features. It also answers a few questions before reaching a conclusion.

What are the key features of the Hayward Super Pump?

Here is a list of its most important features:

  • Created for permanently installed inground swimming pools.
  • Easy service: dismantle motor and drive assembly by removing four bolts.
  • It has a big strainer basket that catches and holds many leaves.
  • Pump components are molded from corrosion-proof PermaGlass.
  • Pump motor has automatic thermal overload protection against overheating.
  • Self-priming centrifugal pump with a diffuser which primes within 5 minutes.
  • Single phase, 60Hz, 3450 RPM, single speed motor.
  • Swing-aside hand knobs make the transparent strainer cover easy to remove.
  • Uni-bracket mounting base can adapt to 48 and 56 frame motors.

What sizes are available?

The following Hayward Super Pump motor sizes are available: 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/2, 2 and 2-1/2 horsepower.

For example, the Hayward SP2607X10 Super Pump is a 1 HP pool pump. Its dimensions are 29 x 10.25 x 11.5 inches. It weighs about 34 pounds.

There are two port sizes depending on the horsepower of the pump motor. The 1/2 to 1-1/2 horsepower Super Pumps have 1-1/2-inch port sizes. The 2 to 2-1/2 horsepower Super Pumps have 2-inch port sizes.

Does it come wired for 115 or 230 volts?

The 1/2 horsepower Super Pump only uses 115-volt wiring. The 3/4 up to 2 horsepower motors can be wired for either 115 or 230 volts. The 2-1/2 horsepower motor only runs on 230 volts. The motors are usually wired for 230 volts at the factory.

The voltage at the motor, when running at full speed, should not be less than 90% or more than 110% of the name plate rated voltage. Such voltage differences might overheat the motor or cause overload tripping. In the long run, it will reduce the longevity of the motor.

Does it need shelter from the storm?

The pool pump is designed for outdoor use, but the electrical components need protection from dampness and flooding during heavy rain. All the water should be drained from the pump when freezing weather conditions are expected to prevent freeze damage.

How long does the Hayward warranty last?

It lasts for one year from date of purchase. It is a limited warranty that warrants that the pool pump is free from poor workmanship and bad materials. Defective components will be replaced under the warranty, but you might have to pay for the transportation and repair of the pump. Damage caused by negligence, poor installation and freezing are not covered by the warranty.

Hayward recommends that a licensed electrician should do all the wiring. Installation should be done by a qualified professional. The pump must be permanently connected to a ground fault circuit interrupter. Improper wiring or installation will void the Hayward warranty. It is also important to maintain the pool pump properly and replace the bearings and seals every few years.

Can you get a Hayward Super Pump with a variable speed motor?

Hayward produces a Super Pump VS model that has a variable speed permanent magnet motor. The variable speed pump is a lot more energy efficient than the single speed pump, but it costs about twice as much. You can find features and see prices for the Hayward Super Pump VS at Amazon.

Hayward Super Pump 700 Series

The Super Pump 700 is an upgraded version with a totally enclosed fan-cooled (TEFC) motor. In addition to the TEFC motor, it has a top-mount wiring compartment for easy installation. Furthermore, it has a chemical-resistant Viton seal for increased resistance to corrosion.

Hayward Super Pump Motor Replacement

These medium-head pumps have high-performance motors that are easily serviced due to its 4-bolt, quick-access design. If you want to save money, then you can change the motor of your old Hayward Super Pump without having to replace the entire unit.

You can buy a replacement motor, and change out your old Hayward Super Pump motor for a new one. You might even consider getting a new TEFC replacement motor. The TEFC design might provide better heat dissipation: as a result, it can reduce overheating and extend the life of the motor. Moreover, the enclosed fan design also makes the pump motor less noisy.

It is important to note that California might prevent the sale and installation of pool pumps, and replacement motors, that are both single speed and one horsepower or greater. Furthermore, California also limits the sale of single-phase, single speed, replacement pool pump motors of 0.5 HP or greater.

Is the Hayward Super Pump a super pump or not?

The Hayward Super Pump is recommended for inground swimming pools. It is a single speed pool pump that runs at its highest revolutions all the time. It uses at least double the amount of electricity when compared to a variable speed pool pump. This might be one of its biggest drawbacks. It is not the most energy efficient pool pump on the market.

Installation and wiring is not difficult, but the services of an electrician and pool professional is recommended, unless you want to do it yourself. It seems that a significant number of people do the pipes and wires at their own risk. The risk is that improper installation might lead to unforeseen leaks, corrosion and pump motor failure.

A few pump owners talk about their Hayward Super Pumps that lasted for up to 10 years or more before they had to replace it. These days, the pumps need to be replaced within 5 years due to motor failure. The reliability of the pump motor seems to have decreased in the last few years. You will not get 10 years of motor life from the newer motors.

The Hayward Super Pump is a super pump, even though Hayward’s quality control and customer service might not be as good as it used to be. If you want the Super Pump, then discover today’s offers at Amazon.
