The Poolvergnuegen PoolCleaner 2-wheel (2X) suction-side swimming pool cleaner is made in the USA for cleaning small and medium-sized inground pools with various surfaces. It connects to the skimmer or a dedicated vacuum line and depends on the pool pump for suction power. If you are looking for a suction-side pool cleaner that is reliable and durable, then read our review of the Poolvergnuegen PoolCleaner 2-wheel pool cleaner.
The PoolCleaner 2X: Features
- Adjustable skirts: keeps suction power constant even when moving over obstacles in the pool.
- It uses the existing pump system and is connected to either the skimmer or to a dedicated vacuum line port.
- It will clean the floor and walls of an average sized pool.
- Patented tire treads: for better movement over obstacles.
- Self-adjusting turbine vanes: adapts to higher or lower water flow for continuous suction power.
- Steering system: left wheel often reverses to change pool cleaner direction.
Is Hayward not making a similar pool cleaner these days?
Yes, they are. It is called the Hayward Aquanaut (read my review). It is basically the same design, but it costs a few dollars more than the Poolvergnuegen, and it has a gray and blue color scheme. How did the Hayward company manage this? Well, they bought the Poolvergnuegen company in 2013. The PoolCleaner by Poolvergnuegen is shown on the Hayward website.
How many hoses are included with the PoolCleaner 2X?
There are nine normal vacuum hose sections and one leader vacuum hose, for a total of ten hose sections. The length of each hose section is about one meter (3.28 feet). The leader hose with its gray adapter cuff is attached to the pool cleaner body, and the rest of the hoses are connected to the leader hose.
Will the 2-wheel PoolCleaner get stuck easily?
It probably won’t get stuck on the steps, but that’s because it rarely climbs onto the steps. Its steering gear system reverses the left wheel of the pool cleaner every so often to help clear it away from obstacles in the pool. It works rather well.
Can it be used in vinyl and fiberglass pools?
Yes, it can, but it requires the right set of tires to do so. You can buy the front tires with three raised treads for vinyl and fiberglass surfaces (part number 896584000-075).
How about using it in tiled pools?
You need another type of tire if you want to use it in a pool with tiled or rough surfaces. You will need to buy and install the solid tires with a knob/hump (part number 896584000-334).
Does the 2-wheel PoolCleaner climb up pool walls?
Yes, if you adjust the suction to the right setting and the tire treads are not worn down. Although, I read somewhere that the tire humps might actually decrease its wall climbing ability because the pool cleaner lifts every time a hump hits the floor. This decreases its ability to stick to the wall. I do not have a simple answer to this question.
How noisy is the 2-wheel PoolCleaner?
It is actually very quiet while working underwater. If you are standing beside the pool, you might hear a soft gear noise since the pool cleaner has mechanical gears.
If you hear a sucking noise, then it has most likely climbed too far up the wall, and you should adjust the amount of suction or flow to prevent this from happening. Worn tire treads or worn skirts might also contribute to excessive wall climbing.
Can the PoolCleaner run underneath a solar cover?
Yes, it probably can. Just make sure that it doesn’t climb too far up the walls by adjusting the suction and flow to the sweet spot.
What is included with the PoolCleaner 2-wheel model?
- Pool cleaner with 2-wheels
- Regulator valve and hose cone (for connecting to skimmer)
- Water gate (for connecting to a dedicated suction port)
- Nine vacuum hose sections
- One leader vacuum hose with a gray adapter
- Two snap-on floats
Conclusion
The PoolCleaner by Poolvergnuegen is powered by the existing swimming pool pump and filter and is connected to either the skimmer or to a dedicated vacuum line port. Its folding, self-adjusting turbine blades enable it to pick up large pool debris without choking. Its steering system does a good job of getting it unstuck from the main drain, steps or rough spots.
The pool cleaner parts that need the most replacement are the tire treads. They wear out with regular use within 18 to 24 months. The tires have wear indicators which show you when to replace them. It is easy to replace the old tires with new ones: the instruction manual will show you how to do this.
The Poolvergnuegen PoolCleaner is also available in a 4-wheel version (4X) for larger pools. I forgot to mention it in the review. If you have a large pool, you might consider the PoolCleaner 4-wheel suction-side model, which has more wheels as well as more hoses. It ships with 11 hose sections plus one leader hose for a total of 12 hoses (about 12 meters or 39 feet).
The Poolvergnuegen 2-wheel PoolCleaner is a well-designed, durable and reliable suction-side pool cleaner. It will probably last for many years without needing expensive repairs (check price on Amazon).
